Jack's Tip:

Putting is the most important part of any golfer's game.  Putting accounts for almost half of your shots during a round.  To make more putts, you have to get the speed correct.  Here are a couple things to consider to help you with your distance control on the greens.  First, decide whether or not the putt is uphill or downhill.  Do this before you get over your putt. Second, make sure your follow through is as long as your back-stroke.  This will help you maintain a consistent putting tempo.  Finally, remember that 100% of putts that come up short don't go in the hole!  However, the harder you hit a putt, the less it's going to break so take this into consideration when your reading the green.  If you understand these three concepts, you will putt better.

Jack's Tip:
Everybody's game is different.  We all have strengths and weaknesses on the golf course.  Some of us are great ball strikers and terrible putters.  Others get it up and down from everywhere but don't hit very many greens. Always evaluate your strengths and weaknesses on the golf course and play to them.  If you are a good putter, understand that you can hit the ball further away from the hole and still score.  If you are a ball striker, be aggressive with your tee shots and approaches.  If you chip well, attack pins from the fairway because you can get it up and down if you miss.  If you play to your strength, your game will improve.

Jack's Tip of the Week:

Chipping can help you turn a bad round into a solid round, a solid round into a good round, and a good round into a great round.  Getting the ball up and down is important for sustaining or building momentum and helps make up for poor approach shots.  Here are a couple tips to hit better chips.

  1. You want to distribute your weight so you have 60% of your weight on your front foot and 40% on your back foot (60% on your left foot and 40% on your right foot for right handed golfers). This is because you are not shifting your weight on a chip shot like you are on a full swing.

  2. Keep your hands ahead of the ball.  This promotes solid contact.

  3. Play the ball back in your stance.  This allows you to hit down on the ball and keeps the flight of the ball low.

  4. Aim your feet a little left of your target.  This will also promote solid contact.

Hit the shot by rocking your shoulders like a putt.  Do not break your wrists.

Jack's Tip

  • "You almost never have a flat lie when you play Heritage Eagle Bend Golf Club.  The ball is usually above or below your feet and you are often hitting your second and third shots from an uphill or downhill lie.  When your faced with an uneven lie, do your best to swing with the slope.  If the ball is above your feet, try to make a rounder swing; if the ball is below your feet, try to make a steeper swing.  If you have an uphill lie or a downhill lie, try to get your shoulder line parallel with the slope.  Hopefully, these thoughts help you hit better shots from uneven lies."
