HEB Community has 2nd Best Blood Drive Ever!

By Clinton Smythe

We had our 2nd best blood drive ever on July 30 (our best drive to-date provided 72 units of blood to Bonfils on January 15, 2010).  Many thanks to our donors who provided 68 units which will help save the lives of up to 204 patients in need!  Welcome to 1st time-ever donors Maralyn Heckman, Jerry and Cean Malcolm, and to 1st time donors at HEB - Diane Woods, Jean Dalebauer, Celeste Casey, Kathy Phelka and Charles Spence:-)  Congratulations and special thanks go to 8 Gallon donor Jack Simons, 5 Gallon donor David Allison, 3 Gallon donors Donna Aydelott, June Goddard, Larry Kobilka, 2 Gallon donor Mary Foglesong and 1 Gallon donor Tom Quinn!

Our HEB Community drive appointments on October 8 are almost filled-up (84 appointments of 87 total).  However, we also need additional donors to sign-up on the Wait-list at the end of the Appointment List at the Welcome Desk (303-693-7788).  In the event of last-minute cancellations and/or deferrals, Wait-listed donors are essential to helping HEB fill all our drives!  If for any reason donors are unable to donate, please call me at 303-501-7444 (rather than Bonfils) to cancel your appointment.  Bonfils really appreciates the generosity of additional new donors in our community to help overcome the short supply of blood in Colorado; through July 30, 2010 we have had 15 new donors which exceeds the 14 new donors in all of 2009, which is very encouraging!  Bonfils is trying to increase the 4-bed size of our December 10 drive to 6-beds; once the size is confirmed (hopefully before our October 8 drive), I will assign our December 10 drive donor appointments in the Bonfils DRM (Donor Relationship Management) system.

A special request from Bonfils to each of our current donors: PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR BLUE AND GREY BONFILS BLOOD CENTER DONOR IDENTIFICATION CARD TO ALL OUR DRIVES; IT WILL HELP SPEED-UP THE REGISTRATION PROCESS WHEN YOU ARRIVE.  IF YOU HAVE MISPLACED YOUR CARD, PLEASE REQUEST A NEW ONE AT THE DRIVE.

Status of Bonfils Goal for HEB Community blood donors half-way through 2010!

By Clinton Smythe

Hard to believe we are already half-way through our six blood drives for the year.  As you may recall, Bonfils has a goal for HEB Community blood donors to provide 312 units of blood in 2010.  As of July 7, after our 1st three drives, our very generous HEB Community donors have provided 199 units of blood to Bonfils (helping almost 600 patients in need of your gifts-of-life), which is almost two-thirds of the Bonfils goal!  Based upon the amazing life-giving response of all our donors, we can expect to see that after our 4th blood drive on July 30, we will be close to exceeding the 289 units of blood provided to Bonfils in 2009.  And with two more blood drives remaining in 2010 (October 8 and December 10), we should far exceed the 312 Bonfils goal!  WAY-TO-GO, HEB COMMUNITY BLOOD DONORS!  Please keep up your great enthusiasm and effort in helping to save lives in Colorado!

Our HEB Community blood drive appointments on October 8 are almost filled-up (84 appointments of 87 total), but we also need additional donors to sign-up on the Wait-list at the end of the Appointment List at the Welcome Desk (303-693-7788).  In the event of last-minute cancellations and/or deferrals, Wait-listed donors are essential to helping HEB fill all our drives!  If for any reason you are unable to donate, please call me at 303-501-7444 (rather than Bonfils) to cancel your appointment.  Bonfils really appreciates the generosity of additional new donors in our community to help overcome the short supply of blood in Colorado; to date we have 10 new donors in 2010 which is very encouraging!

Blood Donors donating July 30 will receive a Bonfils beach towel!

By Clinton Smythe

Bonfils summer promotion is a Bonfils beach towel for donors who give blood between June 27 and August 28!  We had a very good May 28 blood drive in spite of holding it the Friday before Memorial Day long-weekend and several appointment cancellations (nevertheless, I will ensure that there will be no blood drives in 2011 scheduled before a public holiday long-weekend:-)  Many thanks to our donors who provided Bonfils with 63 units of blood which will help save the lives of up to 189 patients in need, and which Bonfils really appreciated receiving over the long-weekend!  Welcome to 1st time-ever donors Karen Brown, Jilleen and Robert Baca, and to 1st time donors at HEB - Barbara Sachetti and Eric Whyard all of who responded to the additional request for help.  Congratulations and special thanks go to 2 Gallon donor Carol Larsen, and 1 Gallon donors Jim Larsen, Janet Dean, Carol Zimmer, Patti Przybylak, Jim Padrick and Jack Tierney!

Our HEB Community blood drive appointments on July 30 and October 8 are already filled-up (87 appointments each), but we need additional donors to sign-up on the Waitlists at the end of both Appointment Lists at the Welcome Desk (303-693-7788).  Waitlisted donors are essential to helping HEB fill our drives in the event of last-minute cancellations and/or deferrals!   Please call me at 303-501-7444 (rather than Bonfils) to cancel your appointment if for any reason you are unable to donate.  Bonfils really appreciates the generosity of additional new donors in our community to help overcome the short supply of blood in Colorado!  Many thanks!

Hello Everyone,

Thank you very much for your efforts to facilitate your blood drive last week.  I can’t thank you enough for all of your time spent in promoting your drive, and getting everyone excited about the blood donation process!

You had 69 folks attending your drive!  We were able to collect 63 units of blood, and there were 4 walk-ins this time,  and only 4 no-shows.  We, of course, couldn’t do it without you!

I know that these results are a bit lower than for your recent drives this year. I’m sure that the holiday week-end had an impact on your results.  As we spoke of Clint, I know that many donors had holiday plans that kept them from participating this time.  Nevertheless, your contributions were very substantial, especially because of the increased need over a holiday like Memorial Day.  We are so grateful that you went ahead with your drive on Friday and did such a fabulous job getting folks in the door!

Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.   Thanks again,

~Sally

The Joys and Rewards of being Blood Donors!

By Clinton Smythe

By the time you read this, as your Liaison I will have attended the 12th annual Community Lifelines event at Bonfils Blood Center (May 10) for 26 year-old, adventure seeker and world traveler, Nate Post who in March last year was diagnosed with a fully-developed rare form of testicular cancer that had caused large tumors in his torso and surrounding vital organs.  The aggressive treatment plan by Nate's medical team at Denver's Porter Adventist Hospital included months of chemotherapy and two emergency surgeries to repair a large tear in his aorta which required 70 transfusions of donated blood.  Throughout his treatment, Nate received nearly 30 more units of blood.  Today, Nate is cancer-free and looking toward his next great adventure - celebrating life!  He is back to enjoying traveling, snowboarding, racing and hiking!  May 10, he was given the opportunity to meet and thank nearly 30 of his 99 selfless blood donors and his medical team who helped save his life!  What an incredible story!  I am sure that there are several wonderful stories among our HEB residents who have experienced, or know someone who has experienced, the miracle of life having received donated blood!  If you wish to share your story with our residents, please email me () a brief paragraph and we will include it in the Bonfils section of the HEB News.

Our HEB Community blood drive appointments on July 30 and October 8 are already filled-up; 87 appointments each!  Thank you so much!  Remember that any additional donors are encouraged to add their names to the Waitlist at the end of both Appointment Lists at the Welcome Desk (303-693-7788) as this is the surest way for me to keep our blood drives at maximum capacity in the event of last-minute cancellations.  Please call me at 303-501-7444 (rather than Bonfils) to cancel your appointment if for any reason you are unable to donate.  Bonfils continues to encourage the generosity of additional new donors in our community to overcome the short supply of blood in Colorado!  Many thanks!!

I’m looking forward to working with you on another great blood drive on May 28th!

By Clinton Smythe

Thanks to the generosity of all of our dedicated donors, our HEB Community blood drive appointments on May 28 and July 30 are already filled-up; yes, all 87 appointments each!  That is a fantastic show of support for the Bonfils cause!

Our 2nd drive of 2010 on March 19 provided 54 donors (out of 72 appointments and 87 slots), whose blood will help up to 162 patients in need!  This brings our total for 2010 to 126 units towards reaching our HEB goal of 480 units.  Congratulations to 7 Gallon donor Jean Balint, 4 Gallon donor Jim Martindale, 3 Gallon donor Tom Ledgerwood, 2 Gallon donors Mary Foglesong and Nicole Luke (Clint and Toni's daughter), and 1 Gallon donors Maureen Kallio and Karen Johnson!  Well done to all of you!

Two Reminders for Improving Appointment Efficiency at our Bonfils Blood Drives

By Clinton Smythe

While we have come a very long way in expanding our blood drives and increasing our number of units of blood for Bonfils thanks to the great response and huge generosity of our HEB Community donors, I have a reminder to ensure that we maximize the efficiency of filling up all of our 87 appointments.  With the welcome return of our snowbird donors this Spring, our May 28 blood drive is full and we have a waitlist; I anticipate that this will also be true for our July 30 and October 8 blood drives.

As you know, I populate the Bonfils database soon after it becomes available based upon each donor's preference of an appointment time.  If any of our donors know in advance that they will be away on holiday, business or otherwise have a conflict, please continue to let me know as soon as possible (
303-501-7444 or ).

Another reminder is that all of our donors who cannot make a particular HEB blood drive due to a last minute conflict can certainly donate at another Bonfils blood drive (say at a Bonfils mobil drive in Parker or at a church) within approximately two weeks before or after each scheduled HEB blood drive; some of our donors have already taken advantage of the opportunity.  When they register at another Bonfils drive and provide the HEB Community code (2687), then HEB receives credit for their donations which go a long way to helping us reach our HEB annual goal!

If any of our donors have any other suggestions regarding improving efficiencies, please let me know.

Bonfils continues to encourage the generosity of additional new donors in our community; please keep up the great work; thanks!  To all our donors, please keep up your enthusiasm for donating and helping to support the supply of blood in Colorado!

The sign-up sheets for May 28 and July 30 are available at the Welcome Desk (303-693-7788).  Please call me at 303-501-7444 to cancel your appointment if for any reason you are unable to donate so that I can try to fill your slot before it is too late.  Many thanks.

Congratulations Don Bevis - 1 Gallon Donor! (pictured below)

HEB Community Blood Donors far-exceeded Bonfils Projected Statistics for 2009
!

By Clinton Smythe

Congratulations and Way-to-Go!  The 1st chart speaks for itself about our year-to-year, continuing successful expansion of HEB blood drives!  Bonfils had projected that HEB donors would provide 219 units last year.  In fact, we exceeded that projection by a whopping 70 units for a total of 289 units of blood which helped save the lives of up to 867 patients.  In addition, we exceeded our own HEB goal of providing 270 units!  A huge thank-you to all our generous, life-saving blood donors!!

Based upon our new, expanded 6-bed/87 appointment blood drives this year, Bonfils is projecting that HEB will provide 312 units in 2010; we are setting our own goal at 480 units, weather permitting.  How can we accomplish that?  By continuing to attract new donors to join our dedicated and reliable cadre, by continuing to fill all our blood drive appointments, and by continuing to minimize our "no-shows".  The 2nd chart shows that HEB continues to attract new donors which is very encouraging!  Another big thank you.  The sign-up sheets for March 19, May 28 and July 30 are available at the Welcome Desk (303-693-7788).  Please remember to cancel your appointment if for any reason you are unable to donate so that I can try to fill your slot.  Many thanks!
